Cell-ebrate

What did we ever do without cell phones? It is difficult to remember what life was like before we had the most “must-have” accessory of the last quarter century.

I remember my first one. It was the size of a shoe and weighed a ton. Each call cost a fortune. It got terrible reception, but it didn’t really matter.

My next one was a little lighter and smaller. It was a lot jazzier, too. I had my choice of ring tones, but I still had to pay attention to where I was calling. There was nothing that instilled fear in me faster than seeing the word “roam” glaring at me from the display. More and more people were getting cells and communication was really kicked up to the next level. I got lousy reception, but I liked it anyway.

As cell phones became more and more popular, I was constantly upgrading. I remember my first red phone. I thought I was so cool. That one was followed by a leopard one. People used to gasp with envy when I answered my fabulously fashionable phone. The reception sucked, but I didn’t care.

Pretty soon, cell phones become more commonplace. The phone companies got really competitive and minutes got cheap as dirt. I could call anywhere in the US for the same money. I got so spoiled. Ordering a pizza from the car so it would arrive home the same time as I did was commonplace. The cell phone age let me feel like a better friend, too. (Don’t tell me you never got stuck in traffic and dialed up your best friend. She thought you were the greatest and you were stuck anyway.)

Cell phones made killing two birds with one stone so much easier. I could talk to anyone anytime. So much stress was relieved with these darn things. And they got to be so James Bond high tech. No more boring one-piece cell phones for me. I had ones that slid, flipped, and popped open to expose the keypad. I could now “text” if I didn’t feel like calling. I had a lot of problems with the reception, but I was getting a lot done.

Fast-forward to NOW. The phones of today are amazing! They are actually computers. They are affordable, so everyone has one. They not only let you make calls all over the globe, they take photos, have GPS systems, and casino games. You can send emails, make videos, deposit money into your bank account, and order most any product. Yippee! Shopping! I can even watch movies and television shows on my new phone... and that’s only the beginning. Now there are apps or applications that boggle the mind. Some are free but you can also buy them. They can do an unbelievable variety of tasks once you install them. Soon we won’t have to do anything ourselves. Our cell phones will do it for us. Even though I am not that technical a person, my new 4G phone has changed my life. It does everything but make toast. Oh wait, maybe I’m wrong. I think I have an app for that!

I can even turn the lights on in my house from my new cell phone so I don’t have to walk into a dark house. This new phone is fantastic! The reception is not that great, but I am sure they are working on it.
